BEING A HAPPY TEENAGER

Andrew Matthews
School

Bullying is one of the most common problems among teenagers. Thousands of kids are experiencing bullying every day. If you are one of those teenagers, don’t blame yourself. It’s not your fault. The school should be a safe place for kids and teenagers. It should be your second home. A school with bullies has failed in its duty to protect the students and their families. Bullies are jealous kids who target others who have the things they lack, like a happy family or the courage to be different. They take out their inner anger on other people. If you want to avoid being bullied, remember the five methods to stop a bully from targeting you. First, look as calm and confident as you can. Bullies want to harass those who fear them. If you show you’re not afraid, they will soon become bored of you. Second, try to act like they’re invisible. Bullies want attention. If you refuse to give them the attention they want, they will find someone else to bully.

Third, be the bigger person. Walk away when the bully starts an argument. Don’t fall into their trap. Fourth, don’t be alone. Bullies are scared of large crowds. They usually target people who are alone and have no chance of fighting. Lastly, value your health. If the bully only wants material things, give it. Don’t risk damaging your body and health on something replaceable. If you’re dealing with a bully, always ask for help. It does not mean you are weak. Ask for help from an adult like your parents or teachers. Tell as many adults as you can. The more adults who know, the more help will come. Let’s look at Kei’s situation and discover how he overcame bullying. Kei is a sophomore. Since he transferred to a new school last year, he has been a victim of bullying. Chase, the school bully, was tall and intimidating. Most students feared him, so no one stood up for Kei whenever he got bullied. Chase usually took all of Kei's lunch money, ripped his textbooks apart, and made Kei do all of his homework. On top of that, Chase would punch Kei and make him run around the school in fear.

One day, Kei decided that enough was enough. He told his teacher, guidance counselor, and parents about his situation. Kei wanted to stop his pain before anything serious happened. When Chase approached Kei, he was no longer afraid. He decided to ignore Chase and show him that he didn’t care. Chase was shocked and confused by Kei’s reaction. Later that day, Chase was expelled by the school principal. Kei no longer went to school alone. He had new friends who were also victims of bullying. They spent most of their time together. Even when other bullies approached them, Kei’s group ignored them. Together, they were stronger and much more confident. Being a victim of bullying should not be something you should be ashamed of. Remember that if someone is bullying you, it’s because they are jealous of you. They wouldn’t be so upset if they had what you had. Report the bully immediately and wait for help from an adult. Many students say, "Why am I even learning about algebra?

I’ll never use this in real life anyway.” It’s true. You probably won’t have to use algebraic formulas when buying a house or going to work. However, it will help you learn what you want in life. School teaches you general knowledge so you can find out what you like. If you’re sitting there and thinking about how you will never use algebra in your life, then the school’s teaching technique worked. Through school, you find out that you dislike mathematics and want to pursue something else. The school’s role is to help you find your interests and direction in life. You will develop several skills and find out which ones suit you the most. School is supposed to be challenging. Without a challenge, you wouldn’t learn a single thing. Solving problems in any subject helps students earn confidence in their abilities. It also helps them reach their full potential.
